"Thermal Justice, a serious game" is a collaborative board game developed as part of Lucas Gobatti’s PhD research at Eawag and ETH Zurich. I am the game’s designer and co-author, collaborating from the earliest stages of its conception and development.
The game explores thermal justice, investigating how extreme heat affects different territories and populations unequally, and how cities can respond to these challenges in more equitable ways. Through simulation and collaboration, participants experience different perspectives, navigate complex systems, and collectively reflect on infrastructure, access, vulnerability, care, and public policy.
I was involved in the conception of the game and designed its visual system, information architecture, game components, and physical experience. In this context, design goes beyond visual form: it becomes a framework for organizing an experience, guiding interactions, and making complex or abstract systems more legible and accessible.
The game has been playtested in different contexts, including at Eawag in Zurich, Switzerland, at USP in São Paulo, Brazil, and in other locations around the world. It is also being developed for implementation in university courses, where it can be used as an educational tool to engage students with questions of climate, urban systems, and social justice.
